Materials: 100% Suar Wood Weight: 5.0 lbs Size: 12" x 9" x 6" This is an exquisite hand-carved wooden Buddha statue. This sculpture depicts a meditating Buddha His right hand is in a chakra formation in front of his chest while his left rest on top of this lap, holding bowl that burn the 'Fire of Life'. The 'Fire of Life' is meant to bless the owner with strength, positive 'chi' or life force and long life, for as long as the fire keeps burning. This masterpiece is carved entirely from a single block of wood to maintain the sculpture's integrity and quality. Buddha's facial expression says it all - calmingly gentle, peaceful and tranquil. It's believed that by placing a Buddha artifact will bless you with much peace, joy and happiness. This sculpture looks great on a shelf, desk, dresser, or coffee table. You will love the quality of the carvings as well as the remarkably shiny smooth polished and dark stains to reduce chances of cracking. The beautiful fine grain are also clearly visible through the stains to further accentuate this spectacular masterpiece. ITEM CONDITION: PLEASE READ: This sculpture is in excellent condition. Bali Wood Art

For Centuries wood carvings in Bali was done for architectural purpose as ornamentation of temples, palaces and houses of high caste.
Art sculpture also made for religious purpose; statues of gods, mythological animals and demons. Mostly Bali wood carvings were painted in a variety of colors, very few carvings unpainted in their natural state.

In this time, Bali wood carving was not as an independent art form, mostly carvers’ imagination and ideas influence and lead by their traditional belief, myths and Hindu religion and done by special sculptor.
When the sculptor starts to carve, he must find good day according to Balinese calendar and chose a certain wood for certain building and purpose. Sometimes he asks Priest for blessing.

Since around 1930s, Bali wood carving was develop rapidly in new theme and styles. Firstly, influenced by two Westerner - Walter Spies and Rudolf Bonet, they encouraged Balinese artist to have freedom expression, not only religious purpose. Then, there were rapid development of new style and themes, especially of more naturalistic, secular figures and scenes, and completely different then the traditional decorative style of intricate, detail, painted mythological figures.
